Portuguese Funerals in Sydney: Traditions, Faith and What to Expect

For Portuguese families in Sydney, a funeral is about faith, family and doing things properly: the vigil, the Mass, the prayers and the gathering afterwards. At Harmony Funerals we arrange Portuguese funerals across Sydney with Portuguese-speaking staff, and your loved one stays close to home at our Canterbury mortuary, just minutes from Lewisham, Petersham and Earlwood.

This guide explains the traditions most Portuguese families hold dear, how they fit with funerals in New South Wales, and what to do first.

Sydney's Portuguese community

Portuguese families first settled around Paddington, then made the inner west their home. Petersham is still known as Sydney's “Little Portugal”, with Portuguese bakeries and churrasqueiras along New Canterbury Road and Audley Street, and the Sydney Portugal Community Club in Marrickville remains a gathering place for generations of families. Many families now live further west and south too, but the inner west is still where so many farewells begin.

That is why we look after Portuguese families from our Canterbury care centre at 51-53 Canterbury Road, in the heart of the inner west. Your loved one is not taken kilometres away to the outer suburbs; they stay close to the family and the community who want to visit and say goodbye.

Portuguese funeral traditions we honour

The vigil (velório)

Traditionally, family and friends gather to keep vigil with the person who has died, sitting with them, praying and supporting one another. In Portugal this often happens in the home or a chapel the night before the funeral. We can arrange the viewing at our Canterbury care centre, close to Petersham, Lewisham and Earlwood, at your church, or at another place that meant something, with time for everyone who needs to come.

The funeral Mass

Most Portuguese funerals follow the Catholic rite, with a funeral Mass celebrated with the coffin present (missa de corpo presente). Families often choose hymns in Portuguese, readings from scripture, and a moment for everyone to come forward to pay their respects. We liaise with your parish priest, organise the church, and can provide a celebrant or clergy if you need one.

The rosary (terço)

Praying the rosary for the soul of the person who has died is a deep part of Portuguese faith. Many families pray the terço during the vigil or on the evenings before the funeral, and we make room for it.

Burial and the procession

Burial has long been the tradition in Portugal, often with mourners walking behind the hearse to the cemetery. Today many Sydney families choose burial and others choose cremation; both are entirely your decision. We arrange burials at cemeteries right across Sydney and can include a slow procession where the cemetery allows.

Mourning and remembrance (luto)

Many families observe a period of mourning, traditionally wearing black (o luto). A memorial Mass is often held after the funeral, commonly on the seventh day (missa do sétimo dia) and again at one month or one year. We are happy to help you plan these, and to print memorial cards and keepsake booklets in Portuguese.

How Portuguese funerals in Sydney differ from Portugal

In Portugal, funerals usually take place within a day or two. In New South Wales the paperwork, the doctor's certificates and, for a cremation, the medical referee's permit mean a funeral is more often held about a week after the death. We move as quickly as the law and your family allow, and we explain every step so nothing is a surprise.

Returning a loved one to Portugal, Madeira or the Azores

Some families wish to lay their loved one to rest in Portugal. Repatriation involves embalming, a sealed coffin suitable for air travel, airline arrangements, and documents such as the certified death certificate, which may need translating. We work with the Consulate-General of Portugal in Sydney, the airline and a funeral director in Portugal to bring your loved one home. If you choose cremation, sending ashes to Portugal is much simpler.

Knowing the cost before you commit

We believe you should know what a funeral costs before you sit down with anyone. You can build your own estimate on our Funeral Quote Calculator, choosing burial or cremation, a funeral service, the church, visitation and personal touches, and see the total straight away. Every price comes from our Pricing Disclosure, and every funeral service includes complimentary keepsake booklets, a framed photo, a personalised candle and a photo story.
