Prepaid & pre-arranged funerals

Plan your own farewell, in your own words, at today’s prices. It is one of the kindest things you can do for the people you love.

Most families meet us on the worst day of their lives, with decisions to make and no idea what their loved one would have wanted. Planning ahead changes that completely.

You can do it two ways, and they are not the same thing. A pre-arranged funeral is your wishes written down and kept on file: free, and with no obligation to prepay or even to use us on the day. A prepaid funeral goes a step further and settles the cost now, at today’s prices, so the funeral is paid for and your family is never handed the bill.

Either way you deal with Josh and a small team, not a call centre, and you will have everything in writing before you commit to anything at all.

Why plan ahead

What it gives your family

It takes the decisions off your family

Grief is a hard time to be choosing coffins and comparing prices. When your wishes are already written down, your family simply has to be there for each other.

The cost is settled

A prepaid funeral is paid for at today’s prices, so your family is not handed a bill on top of everything else they are dealing with.

You get the funeral you actually want

Your music, your readings, the right church or the right beach. Nobody has to guess, and nobody has to argue about what you would have preferred.

There is no pressure

Recording your wishes is free and commits you to nothing. Prepaying is a separate decision you can make later, or not at all.

Your choices

What you can decide in advance

As much or as little as you like. Some people write down every last detail, down to the song they want played as everyone leaves. Others only want the big things settled and are happy to leave the rest to their family.

  • Burial or cremation
  • Where the service is held: our own chapel at Blacktown, the Royal Remembrance Chapel in St Marys, a church, a club or your own garden
  • The coffin, from our coffin book
  • Music, readings and who will speak
  • Flowers, or a request for donations instead
  • Newspaper and online funeral notices
  • Whether the service is filmed for family who cannot be there
  • Who we should contact first

Peace of mind

Your money is protected by law

This is the question we are asked most, and it is the right one to ask. When you prepay a funeral with us, the money does not sit in our bank account. It is paid into an approved pre-paid funeral fund, where it is held in trust and invested until the day it is needed.

Prepaid funerals in New South Wales are regulated under the Funeral Funds Act 1979 and overseen by NSW Fair Trading. We follow those rules to the letter, and we are glad to walk you through exactly how it works before you sign anything.

  • Your money is paid into an approved pre-paid funeral fund, not into our business account
  • It is held in trust and invested there until the funeral is needed
  • Prepaid funerals in NSW are regulated under the Funeral Funds Act 1979
  • Those funds are overseen by NSW Fair Trading
  • Investment returns stay with your contract, which is what lets it keep pace with rising costs
  • You receive a written contract setting out exactly what you have paid for

Because the money is held in a regulated fund rather than by us, it is not tied to our business. If you move interstate, or your family would rather use a different funeral director on the day, call us and we will explain your options for transferring the contract.

How it works

Four steps, at your pace

  1. Have a conversation. Call us on 02 9676 2561 or email care@harmonyfunerals.com.au and we will arrange a time to sit down, either at one of our care centres or at your kitchen table.
  2. Make the choices that matter to you. We will walk you through the options without rushing you. Decide the things you care about and leave the rest to us.
  3. Get it in writing. We put the full arrangements and the exact cost in writing. Nothing is locked in until you have read it and you are happy.
  4. We keep it on file. Your wishes stay with us, ready for the day your family needs them. Come back and change them whenever you like.

Questions about prepaid funerals

What is the difference between a pre-arranged and a prepaid funeral?

A pre-arranged funeral is your wishes written down and kept on file. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing. A prepaid funeral is the same thing with the cost settled in advance, so the funeral is paid for at today’s prices and your family is not left with the bill.

Do I have to pay to record my funeral wishes?

No. Sitting down with us to plan a funeral is free and there is no obligation to prepay or to use us on the day. Many families start with a conversation, take the notes home to think about, and decide later.

Does a prepaid funeral protect me from price rises?

That is the main reason families choose one. The funeral you select is paid for at today’s prices, so later increases in our costs are not passed on to your family.

What can I decide in advance?

As much or as little as you like: burial or cremation, the chapel or church, the coffin, the music and readings, the flowers, the notices, and who should be contacted. Some people write down every detail, others just want the big decisions settled.

Can I change my mind later?

Your wishes are not set in stone. Life changes, and so do families. Call us whenever you want to go over what is on file and we will update it with you.

What happens when the time comes?

Your family calls us on 02 9676 2561, at any hour. We already have your wishes on file, so instead of making decisions under pressure they can simply confirm the arrangements and be with each other.

Where is my money held if I prepay?

Not with us. Prepaid funerals in NSW are governed by the Funeral Funds Act 1979, and the money you pay is placed into an approved pre-paid funeral fund, where it is held in trust and invested until the funeral is needed. Those funds are overseen by NSW Fair Trading. You will have a written contract setting out exactly what has been paid for.

Can I pay by instalments?

Talk to us about it. Some people prefer to settle the whole amount in one go, others would rather pay it off over time. We will go through what is possible for your situation and put the arrangement in writing before anything is agreed.

What if I move away or my family would rather use someone else?

Because the money sits in a regulated fund rather than in our business account, a change of circumstances does not mean it is lost. If you move interstate, or your family would prefer another funeral director on the day, call us and we will explain your options for transferring the contract.

Will a prepaid funeral affect my pension?

A prepaid funeral contract that has been paid in full is generally exempt from the Centrelink assets test, and funeral bonds are exempt up to a limit that is indexed each year. Those rules are set federally and they do change, so please confirm the current position with Services Australia or your own financial adviser. We will provide whatever paperwork they ask for.

How much does a prepaid funeral cost?

It depends entirely on what you choose. Our Simple Bare Essentials Cremation starts from $3,650 and our Simple Bare Essentials Funeral, held in our Blacktown chapel or at the Royal Remembrance Chapel in St Marys, starts from $6,195 (both inc. GST). You will have the full cost in writing before you commit to anything.

Do you arrange prepaid funerals across Sydney and the Central Coast?

Yes. We look after families from Blacktown, St Marys, Penrith and the Hills through to the Inner West, St George, Macarthur and right up the Central Coast, from care centres at Blacktown, Canterbury, Smeaton Grange and Tuggerah. We are happy to come to your home rather than have you travel to us.

Rather talk it through? Call 02 9676 2561, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or send us a message and we will call you back.

Anything on this page about pensions, funeral bonds or the assets test is general information only and is not financial or legal advice. Those thresholds are set federally and are indexed, so please check the current figures with Services Australia or your own financial adviser before you decide.
